You may be suffering from diabetes and not even know it. In the last half a year, I know 2 people, 1 middle aged and one young man, who ended up in ICU because they had become so ill, mis-diagnosed, and were in a life threatening situation.
Both of these persons had blood glucose levels that were over the top. Diabetes can mimic many other conditions, and in the above cases, they were diagnosed as a flu bug, a virus.
So what happens when you become advanced diabetic and don't know it?
Elevated levels of ketone bodies in the blood decrease the blood's pH, leading to DKA.
(Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA ) DKA results from a shortage of insulin; in response the body switches to burning fatty acids and producing acidic ketone bodies that cause most of the symptoms and complications.)
On presentation at hospital, the patient in DKA is typically dehydrated, and breathing rapidly and deeply. Abdominal pain is common and may be severe. The level of consciousness is typically normal until late in the process, when lethargy may progress to coma.
